Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for operations
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply trip pipe documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
   • Communicate with other personnel at site according to work requirements and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
   • Confirm availability and status of necessary permits to work according to operational and legislative requirements
   • Confirm availability of necessary third party utilities according to operational requirements
2. Prepare to trip tubulars
   • Check safety lines, ropes and air hoists/winch lines
   • Check equipment for safety and operations
   • Line up trip tank if applicable to equipment in use
   • Prepare pipe racking system
3. Trip and rack tubulars
   • Assist in tripping in and out using required techniques based on the lifting equipment and tripping method used
   • Rack and store tubular based on the lifting equipment and tripping method used
   • Record tasks where required

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

trip pipe on at least two occasions, including:

preparing pill

putting trip tank on line and filling if applicable to equipment in use

releasing pipe from elevators

connecting lifting equipment to drill string and stabilise

operating air hoists if required

operating a manual or automated racking system.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply required documentation, policies and procedures

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of pipe tripping, including:

interpreting work requirements

handling tubular and equipment

visually and physically checking lifting and running equipment

rectifying any identified faults and malfunctions within scope of own role and escalating where required

work with others to trip pipe to meet the required outcomes, including:

working in a team and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

site and manufacturer requirements and procedures

key policies, procedures and established requirements for tripping pipe, including those for:

performing drilling operation

safe equipment operation

environmental issues

hand signalling

preparing working knots if applicable

rig maintenance

normal drilling operations

non-routine drilling operations

complying with human resource management and rig management

types and characteristics of discharges including liquids, gases and solids

types and characteristics of materials including flammable, toxic, corrosive, explosive and radioactive.
